The Soil Management course provides farmers, extension officers, and agripreneurs with practical knowledge and skills to maintain healthy and productive soils for sustainable agricultural production. Developed by the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), the course integrates research-based practices and demonstrations that help farmers optimize soil fertility, improve crop yields, and reduce land degradation.
Healthy soil is the foundation of productive farming systems, yet many farmers face challenges such as nutrient depletion, erosion, and poor water retention. This course addresses these issues by providing step-by-step guidance on soil assessment, fertility management, and conservation practices tailored to Kenya’s diverse agro-ecological zones.
Learners will gain practical skills to:
-
Assess soil health, including texture, structure, pH, and nutrient content.
-
Apply integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) using organic and inorganic fertilizers.
-
Implement soil conservation techniques, such as terracing, contour farming, and cover cropping.
-
Improve soil organic matter through composting, green manures, and mulching.
-
Manage soil water effectively for crop growth, including irrigation and drainage strategies.
-
Prevent soil degradation and promote climate-smart agriculture practices.
By the end of this course, participants will be equipped to implement sustainable soil management practices that enhance crop productivity, conserve natural resources, and build resilience to climate change, contributing to food security and long-term farm profitability.
