The Mango Farming course provides farmers, extension officers, and agripreneurs with comprehensive, research-based knowledge and practical skills for successful mango production and value addition in Kenya. Developed by experts from the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), this course guides learners through the full mango value chain — from orchard establishment to post-harvest management and marketing.
Mango is one of Kenya’s most important fruit crops, offering high potential for domestic and export markets. However, its productivity and quality are often constrained by poor orchard management, pests such as fruit flies, and inadequate post-harvest handling. This course addresses these challenges through step-by-step video lessons based on KALRO’s validated Technologies, Innovations, and Management Practices (TIMPs).
Learners will gain practical knowledge and skills to:
-
Select suitable mango varieties for specific regions and market needs (e.g., Apple, Ngowe, Kent, Tommy Atkins).
-
Prepare land and establish orchards using appropriate planting and spacing techniques.
-
Manage nutrition, irrigation, and pruning for vigorous tree growth and consistent fruiting.
-
Identify, monitor, and control major pests and diseases such as fruit flies, anthracnose, and powdery mildew.
-
Harvest and handle fruits properly to maintain quality and extend shelf life.
-
Engage in value addition (e.g., mango juice, dried mango) and access local and export markets.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to apply improved, climate-smart, and market-oriented mango production practices that enhance fruit quality, minimize losses, and increase profitability. The course contributes to building a sustainable and competitive mango value chain aligned with KALRO’s mission to promote innovation and technology adoption in Kenyan agriculture.
